01 Habitat Threat Analysis!

Habitat Threat Analysis is an holistic root cause analysis and problem solving methodology designed to address a specific type of human-caused threat to wildlife habitat, such as mining, pollution or poaching.

The methodology encompasses the realms of environment, society and economy.  It is premised on the habitat philosophies that we advocate on this website, most notably ’embracing complexity’, ‘ecocriticism’, ‘habitat sovereignty’, ‘wholeness principle’, ‘probablistic causation’, ‘fresh learning’, ‘fostering knowledge exchange’, ‘freethought’, ‘correspondence theory of truth’ and ‘progressivism’.

Habitat Threat Analysis for each Threat Type, is organised into distinct knowledge ‘chapters’ which are sequenced in a logical problem solving progression as follows:

1.  Habitat Campaigns & Media

2. Impacts & Issues

3. History

4. Industry, Law Structure & Policies

5. Conservation Groups approaches

6. Research & Reviews

7. Problem Solving of values and goals

8. Reform Initiatives

9. Reference Database

Why organise Habitat Threat Analysis by Threat Type?

Wildlife habitats around the globe are reducing in scale and viability due to the many human-caused threats.  Typically, for an identifiable area of wildlife habitat, there will be one or two dominant threats adversely impacting on that area, such as Threats from Poaching on Congolese mountain gorillas, and Threats from Bushfire Management on the Greater  Blue Mountains World Heritage Area in Australia.  Each Threat Type has its own distinct and unrelated characteristics comparable around the globe; its distinct and unrelated industry, laws, motivations, value system, goals, policies and practices.  For a given Threat Type it will have comparable environmental campaign battle histories across the globe, comparable ad transferable reviews and research.  For a given Threat Type it will present common threads for lessons learning and problem solving to provide a useful knowledge base to devise reform initiatives.

Benefits of Habitat Threat Analysis

  • Facilitates the organisation of vast amounts of information (research, correspondence media, campaigning, reports, proposals, etc) into a logical order for quick retrieval and reference
  • Applicable for short-term, long term and intermittent environmental  causes and campaigns
  • Rather that taking an adversarial approach which narrowly produces ‘winners’ and ‘losers’, Habitat Threat Analysis  adopts an inquisitorial approach focused upon obtaining insightful understanding of the problems and root cause.
  • Builds upon knowledge and research from comparable causes
